Getting Started

How to Get Started

I like how she works in partnership with me to figure out what I need , vs. a cookie cutter approach. I feel seen and understood.

more of what our clients say »

Below is an outline of what to expect and steps you can take to initiate our support:

  • Email / Phone
  • 15 min consultation
  • Patient Portal to fill out paperwork
  • Initial Appointment

Our practice offers a 15 minute free consultation to discuss your needs, introduce our evidenced-based psychotherapy approach, and answer any questions you may have. We have also outlined many of the frequently asked questions on our Practice FAQs Section below to get you started. After exploring our website to learn about our practices and expertise, you may Send Us a Message if you have a particular question or Schedule a Free 15 minute Phone Consultation to engage with our team of highly qualified experts.

Once our practice receives a request for your consultation call, we will confirm the time and call you at the provided number. By the end of that call, you will know more about our treatment approach and clinician expertise. Additionally, we would have the information necessary to appropriately determine which provider is the best fit for your needs and preferences. We will do our best to schedule your intake appointment during that call or we will have the assigned clinician follow up with you directly within 24 hours. Prior to your intake appointment, you will receive a login request from our secure patient portal. Please review and complete the intake forms and digitally sign the office policies. A link to our secure video conferencing platform (Simple Practice) will be sent to the email provided and can be accessed the day of your appointment.

The first two sessions are spent identifying the specific areas of concern, reviewing the most appropriate treatment approach, learning about you as an individual and family member, and developing a custom treatment plan aimed at decreasing distress and creating lasting positive change. The anticipated duration and frequency of treatment will be discussed and agreed upon during this time as well. Anytime questions or concerns with treatment arise, our clinicians work collaboratively with you to resolve them. Additionally, the practice leadership team is accessible to you and regularly meets with all staff to ensure you receive the best care available.

Please click the Get Started button below if you are ready to schedule a free, 15 minute initial consultation for individual, couple, or family therapy or schedule a free, 30 minute screening for a skills group.

Availability

GI Psychology prides ourselves on our mission to provide patients living with Disorders of the Gut-Brain Interaction access to clinicians who are highly trained in evidenced based treatments. GI Psychology is fully virtual and offers appointments throughout the day; including evenings and weekends.  Currently, we are able to serve patients every state.

Forms

We ask potential patients to review and complete several forms prior to the first session. These include a Privacy Notice and an Informed Consent for Treatment which outlines the business side of treatment. Completing these forms prior to the first session helps us maximize our time together during the initial sessions. The forms will be provided to you through secure patient portal after our initial phone consultation.

Insurance

We do not participate with any insurance panels. As an out-of-network provider, we encourage each potential patient to consult with their insurance provider regarding out-of-network benefits for a Licensed Clinical Psychologist or Mental Health provider that you may see through GI Psychology.

Patients pay at the end of the session and are then provided a Superbill that has all the codes the insurance company needs. We recommend calling your insurance company to ask how they reimburse for “out of network mental health”.

See our Practice FAQs section  below for suggestions on the questions to ask your insurance company. It is your responsibility to verify this eligibility if you wish to use this benefit. We will provide you with a copy of your Superbill on a regular basis. You can then submit it to your insurance company for reimbursement, if you so choose.

Insurance FAQs

Our Practice FAQs

How do I schedule a consultation or intake?

Please review the information above where you will find a step by step outline for how to schedule an intake or a phone consultation.

Are your services covered by insurance?

We are out of network for insurance. That means that patients pay after the session and then they are given a Superbill that has all the codes the insurance company needs. If you want to know how much they will reimburse you, we recommend calling to ask how they reimburse for “out of network mental health”.

What is Gap Exception or Single Case Agreement?

Many patients are able to get our services covered at a higher rate than typical out-of-network mental health, as if we are in-network, by receiving a gap exception/single case agreement. See this handout for more details.

Which types of payment do you accept?

We accept credit cards such as Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, and HSA cards.

Can I access a Good Faith Estimate?

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate of Expected Charges” explaining how much your medical care will cost under the No Surprises Act. See this handout for more details.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services. This includes  related costs like medical tests, prescription drugs, equipment, and hospital fees.

Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least one business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose,     for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.

For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises.

Which states do you serve?

GI Psychology is fully virtual and offers appointments throughout the day; including evenings and weekends.  Currently, we are able to serve patients in every state.

Which clinician is skilled at helping with my concern and which office is he/she located?

GI Psychology care coordinators are skilled at assessing your individual needs and making clinician recommendations within the initial consultation call. We will ask you questions about your concerns, individual needs and preferences, as well as which state you reside. These details will help inform our recommendations for the clinician best suited to help you achieve your treatment goals. GI Psychology is fully virtual and provides treatment via telepsychology services.

How long will treatment last?

Although the answer to this question is highly individualized, many patients initially commit to 10 sessions. There are numerous factors that influence how long therapy lasts. In general, treatment completes when the client and/or therapist agree that treatment goals have been met and the symptoms have been resolved sufficiently.

What do I do if I need to cancel or reschedule?

You may access the Patient Portal to cancel and reschedule appointments as long as it is outside the 48 hour cancellation policy window. If you need to cancel within 48 hours, please call your clinician directly to notify him/her of this cancellation.

How do I share concerns and compliments?

GI Psychology clinicians greatly appreciate feedback from their patients. You are encouraged to share concerns and praises with your therapist directly during your therapy sessions. You are also welcome to communicate with GI Psychology leadership about any additional matters by using this link to Contact Us. You may also use this Patient Feedback form. Our team is committed to excellence and your feedback is vital to this.

How can I learn more about treatments for GI Disorders and GI Psychology?

Start by reviewing the resources available on our website. Upon meeting with your therapist, you will likely be provided additional recommendations for websites, videos, and/or printed resources.

Also, you’re welcome to visit our FAQs page for more information about Gut-Brain Interaction Disorder and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), then contact us for a consultation; we look forward to being of help.

What ages do you treat?

We provide care for children (including those younger than six when appropriate, such as for encopresis), adolescents, and adults with gastrointestinal disorders, chronic pain, and other medically complex conditions.

What do telehealth sessions look like for children?

Pediatric sessions are flexible, interactive, and designed to meet each child’s developmental needs. We expect parent participation, but the level varies based on age, functioning, and what’s clinically indicated. Our team includes clinicians specifically trained and passionate about working with young children in a virtual setting, so families can feel confident knowing we understand the challenges and use creative strategies to make sessions engaging and effective. Parents are supported with education and coaching to reinforce progress at home, ensuring therapy is both practical and empowering for the whole family.
